Boaters Make Successful Descent of L.A. River in 52-mile Los Angeles River Expedition
A eclectic group of Angelenos successfully navigated kayaks and canoes down the full length of the 52-mile L.A. River (from headwaters to estuary) as part of the first-ever Los Angeles River Expedition 2008. The three-day exploratory expedition demonstrated that the whole river merits a determination as a "traditional navigable water" -- which would entitle the river to the highest standards of federal clean water protections under the Clean Water Act. The Army Corps of Engineers, however, still maintains that only 4 miles of the entire river can be considered traditionally navigable waters, and that boats are not allowed in the LA River, despite California public trust laws that do not support that notion. Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 21, 2008 -- Friends of the Weingart East Los Angeles YMCA will be honoring Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) this coming February 22, 2008 during its Annual Fundraiser Gala in Los Angeles. This event will be held at Cicada Restaurant on 617 S. Olive St. in Downtown Los Angeles at 7:00PM
"Congresswoman Roybal-Allard will receive the "Heart of the Family Award in recognition of her long commitment to this YMCA, which offers multiple programs and Summer Camp to the East Los Angeles community, as well as a safe place for adults and kids to exercise and thrive," explains Ruben Corona, Executive Director of Weingart East Los Angeles YMCA. He says, "We are grateful for many years of the Congresswoman's support to our facility and her personal interest in helping us better serve the community. She is very connected to our history."
The theme of the event is a Tribute to The Beatles and it promises to be an event full of fun and surprises. Previous Gala events have included am 18th Century Maquerade Ball and a Tribute to the Golden Era of Hollywood.
