Doe Run Peru Reports Significant Reduction in Air Lead in La Oroya
La Oroya (PRWEB) January 23, 2008 -- Air quality monitoring in the Andean town of La Oroya confirms that average annual lead levels were down more than 60 percent in 2007 compared to previous years, officials with Doe Run Peru (http://www.doerun.com.pe/) reported.
By the end of 2007 the average level of lead in the air in La Oroya, where Doe Run Peru operates a metals processing facility, had decreased 61.7 percent compared to 2006.
?These achievements are the result of the environmental projects we have launched to reduce metals emissions and thereby decrease their levels in the air in La Oroya,? said Jose Mogrovejo, Doe Run Peru?s vice president for environmental affairs.
Mogrovejo added that the company is now working on projects intended to bring the levels down even further, with an objective of having levels no higher than 5 micrograms per cubic meter. Levels for 2007 were measured at 0.796 micrograms per cubic meter, down from 2.08 micrograms per cubic meter in 2006.
To date Doe Run Peru has invested more than $157 million in environmental projects, a significant increase from its initial agreement with the Peruvian government for $107.5 in spending. By October of 2009, when the company expects to complete the remaining project included under its environmental operating agreement with the state (known by its Spanish acronym, PAMA) the company?s total spending is expected to reach $244 million, 2.3 times the original commitment.
