Boaters Make Successful Descent of L.A. River in 52-mile Los Angeles River Expedition
A eclectic group of Angelenos successfully navigated kayaks and canoes down the full length of the 52-mile L.A. River (from headwaters to estuary) as part of the first-ever Los Angeles River Expedition 2008. The three-day exploratory expedition demonstrated that the whole river merits a determination as a "traditional navigable water" -- which would entitle the river to the highest standards of federal clean water protections under the Clean Water Act. The Army Corps of Engineers, however, still maintains that only 4 miles of the entire river can be considered traditionally navigable waters, and that boats are not allowed in the LA River, despite California public trust laws that do not support that notion. California CPA Firm Warns of the Growing Pressure to Crack Down on Those Not Filing Tax Returns
Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) May 31, 2007 -- California CPA Firm, Murray & Young, which has been assisting with individuals and businesses in California Tax Help, is warning those who have not filed tax returns that Congress is pressuring the Internal Revenue Service to do a better job of cracking down on non-tax-filers or those who should file tax returns but have not.
The IRS has estimated the nation's tax gap to stand at about $290 billion, for the 2001 tax year. The difference between what is owed to the government and what is collected has sparked lawmakers to put pressure on the IRS to take action.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus is one of these many lawmakers pushing hard on the IRS to improve tax collection. "Those who owe the IRS a tax return but fail to file are doing more than just breaking the law," stated Sen. Baucus. "They're draining our economy of vital resources that we need to pay for health care, education, and even tax relief."
For those who have not filed tax returns but should have, here are a few suggestions:
•Take action before the government does. The situation changes drastically when the government initiates the process.
•Make sure to come clean. It is unwise to file not only a delinquent tax return but one that is less than accurate.
•For those who have not filed because they cannot pay what they owe, consider filing anyways and try to arrange some sort of payment plan.
•Many people who have not filed for many years may actually be eligible for a refund.
There is no penalty for not filing when you are due a refund, you must file within 3 years of the date the return was due otherwise the money becomes the governments. Many people fail to file for a number of reasons including severe personal crisis, such as an illness, divorce, or death of a close family member. Nonetheless, it is not too late to file a return today.
