Boaters Make Successful Descent of L.A. River in 52-mile Los Angeles River Expedition
A eclectic group of Angelenos successfully navigated kayaks and canoes down the full length of the 52-mile L.A. River (from headwaters to estuary) as part of the first-ever Los Angeles River Expedition 2008. The three-day exploratory expedition demonstrated that the whole river merits a determination as a "traditional navigable water" -- which would entitle the river to the highest standards of federal clean water protections under the Clean Water Act. The Army Corps of Engineers, however, still maintains that only 4 miles of the entire river can be considered traditionally navigable waters, and that boats are not allowed in the LA River, despite California public trust laws that do not support that notion. LA County considers the river a...

California AB1802 Funds for Online Reading Instruction for EL Students: Unique Reader Pre-Qualified
Kensington, CA (PRWeb) February 26, 2007 -- Let's Go Learn, Inc. announces that its innovative and award-winning online differentiated reading instruction reading program, Unique Reader, is pre-qualified for use under California's Assembly Bill (AB) 1802 funding. California's AB1802 allows for the purchase of supplemental materials for English Language students by school districts in California.
This means that now virtually all schools in California can receive the proven benefits that Unique Reader delivers. Unique Reader begins with a Diagnostic Online Reading Assessment (DORA), in which students are assessed online in seven sub-skills of reading. Unique Reader then provides targeted, online differentiated reading instruction. It dramatically accelerates reading achievement for EL students by recognizing each student's individual needs without guesswork. Unlike other programs, the assessment embedded in Unique Reader is a fully diagnostic literacy assessment.
According to the California Department of Education, "Assembly Bill 1802, Chapter 79 of the Statutes of 2006, appropriates $30,000,000 on a one-time basis for local educational agencies (LEAs) to purchase supplementary instructional materials for English learners (ELs) in kindergarten through twelfth grade 'to accelerate pupils as rapidly as possible towards grade level proficiency' in reading, writing, and speaking English...." Under AB1802, districts may apply for up to $25 in funding per English Language student, based on the most recent school census.
Districts must first apply to the state for AB1802 funding, and funds may only be used to purchase state-approved supplemental materials, to be used in addition to other state-adopted programs. Unique Reader, with its adaptive reading assessment and differentiated instruction, is pre-qualified by the Department of Education for purchase with AB1802 funding.
