Boaters Make Successful Descent of L.A. River in 52-mile Los Angeles River Expedition
A eclectic group of Angelenos successfully navigated kayaks and canoes down the full length of the 52-mile L.A. River (from headwaters to estuary) as part of the first-ever Los Angeles River Expedition 2008. The three-day exploratory expedition demonstrated that the whole river merits a determination as a "traditional navigable water" -- which would entitle the river to the highest standards of federal clean water protections under the Clean Water Act. The Army Corps of Engineers, however, still maintains that only 4 miles of the entire river can be considered traditionally navigable waters, and that boats are not allowed in the LA River, despite California public trust laws that do not support that notion. LA County considers the river a...

Internet Moving from Information to Entertainment. Is Los Angeles Ready?
Los Angeles, CA (PRWeb) December 28, 2006 -- CalPOP.com, the largest dedicated server provider in Los Angeles has just leased one of the last big available data center spaces left in the city - the "old Genuity" data center - 30,000 square feet at 611 Wilshire in the "One Wilshire" block - a hotspot of internet connectivity in Downtown Los Angeles. CalPOP's other 10,000 square foot data center at 600 W. 7th in Los Angeles is nearly full. "The days of leasing already built-out data center space left behind after the 'dot bomb' crash of 2000 are over -- at least in Los Angeles." Says Ross Thiers, Co-President of CalPOP.
And even CalPOP's new space is largely already spoken for. Why? Because there has been a sudden interest in data center space in Los Angeles as a result of the entertainment industry "waking up".
"I think the purchase of YouTube.com by Google really opened the eyes for the first time of the Hollywood Studio execs who had really been caught napping" says Lynn Hoover, another Co-President of CalPOP.com. "Also, the Internet giants like Yahoo and Google, who already know that the future of the internet is entertainment, have been opening sizable offices in Los Angeles --partly to tap into the world's warehouse of content. And for some reason this has gone largely unnoticed by the community."
"Everyone seems to finally "get it" -- they are seeing that as the gigabit internet lines are replaced with 10 gigabit lines (10gbE) - simply by changing the router cards on either end of the fiber - and without even changing the fibers themselves - that more bandwidth, or capacity, for less cost is around the corner. 10 times more bandwidth. This means that Full Screen video delivery via Internet, something that has been around for a long time but which has been cost prohibitive, is on its way and will eventually become the norm." says Evert Van Niekerk, CalPOP's third Co-President.
Our clients are using more and more bandwidth and are demanding lower and lower prices which has driven CalPOP to create it's Hybrid Bandwidth product-which is redundant and multi-homed bandwidth at the lowest available prices. Perfect for those clients who use lots of bandwidth - like IPTV, and VOIP. IPTV is television over the internet and VOIP is voice over "IP" which loosely translates to using the internet for making phone calls.
"In 2007 we will be upgrading some of our gigabit lines to 10gbE for the first time." says Lynn. "We are determined to provide the bandwidth, servers, and support that the entertainment industry demands as they put more and more content on the net", says Ross. "We are already connected via gigabit fiber to MZIMA, Level3, Cogent, SAVVIS, and have just added ATT." " When you combine the best features and routes of each network, it makes your own network stronger than any one of the networks you connect to - and that much faster and redundant too." says Evert.
"Hollywood is making a digital comeback! The irons are in the fire and CalPOP is excited to be a part of this new technology and looks forward to an exciting 2007!" says Lynn.
